Thermodynamic Architecture beyond sustainability ranking systems – IEID 2019

Renata Sentkiewicz (Abalos+Sentkiewicz AS+) has participated in the International Forum on Innovation and Emerging Industries Development (IEID 2019)  held in Shanghai, China on September 18, 2019. Her lecture, entitled ‘Thermodynamic Architecture beyond sustainability ranking systems’ exposed that, as practitioners, we cannot be satisfied with environmental assessments systems that only consider the interior energy balance of buildings as its goal at the expense of using public space as an energy dissipation dumpster. The balanced relationship between Form / Matter / Flow in architectural design -achieved by both parametric tools and basic thermodynamic principles- can contribute to a genuine thermodynamic architecture rooted in local material culture. Four case studies with different scales and locations was exposed, showing an approach to an updated design methodology.
