Bío-Bío Regional Theatre

The building has to offer a spatial response to an ambivalent place, at once endowed with a singular beauty and cut off from urban life by its location. It has to transform an essentially self-absorbed brief into an opportunity to catalyse public life and social interaction. To do so, it is configured as a “place of experience” that links culture with the geographical framework.

Making the roofs passable, giving them movement, intensifies the relation with the landscape and multiplies the centre’s activities, encouraging spontaneous creativity. This undulating, stratified geometry also prompts a polysemic interpretation, referring at once to the behind-the-scenes world of the theatre, to the watery landscape which it overlooks and to the dark universe of seismic activity.
